Wikipedia places Irmo about twelve miles northwest of downtown Columbia, in both Lexington and Richland counties, at about 358 feet. Interstate 26 passes close by, Harbison Boulevard meets it near a large shopping area, and an engineering route guide lists Lake Murray Boulevard as South Carolina Highway 60 through town. That mix of retail traffic and subdivisions gives dogs plenty to react to, from carts in parking lots to cyclists at crossings.
The Saluda River flows out of Lake Murray below the dam, and a county recreation site nearby lists ten miles of trails, two boat ramps and an observation deck. It also lists a fenced off-leash area for owners of well-mannered dogs who are vaccinated and spayed or neutered, with a yearly pass. Outside that fenced section, the page gave no leash rules, so assume a leash and check signs. Recall practice is worth doing before any off-leash visit.
Harbison State Forest is also close, and Wikipedia's Columbia article lists it among the area's outdoor places. This guide did not confirm its dog rules, so look at the posted notices at the trailhead. Pine and hardwood woods mean ticks and heat in warm months. Check your dog's coat after outings, carry water and pick shaded early hours, since the Midlands sun is strong from late spring onward.
Dogs here often meet other dogs at lake-area neighborhoods and trailheads, which can be stressful for a leashed dog with no room to move away. If yours pulls hard or barks when another dog appears, work at a distance and reward quiet glances. Private lessons are generally estimated at $75 to $150 each, and reactivity programs at $600 to $1,800, both varying by trainer and market. Bring a note of exactly where your dog struggles and what happens just before it does; a clear description saves lesson time and shapes a better plan.
